How to Dunk Exercises

If you are trying to boost your vertical leap and learn how to dunk, there are two muscles in particular you will need to be aware of; quadriceps and calves. Of course, you can benefit from increasing the strength and flexibility in all of your leg muscles, but those two muscles in particular will give you the strength and power needed to lift you out of the gym.

There are a number of stretches, exercises, jumps and lifts you can make in order to develop these two muscles. Keep in mind you want to build strength and speed in order to increase your vertical leap. Too much muscle can actually slow you down and decrease your vertical leap which is why it is important that you throw some quickness drills in as well.

To start, lets go over some of the exercises and lifts you can include in your "How To Dunk" Training workouts for each muscle. Squats and lunges are excellent as both exercises will work out each of the two muscles along with other muscles in your leg as well. If you are not a member of a gym and have access to machines, wall sits can get the job done pretty well. Just lean with your back against the wall and squat down to a 90 degree angle. Hold that position for as long as you can and you will feel the burn.

For calves in particular, calf raises and lifts are always pretty effective. Stand on a stair with your heels hanging over the edge and lift up with your toes. Next lower back down and rise back up with your toes again. You can repeat this as many times as you would like for this exercise.

As soon as you begin to build strength and muscle in your leg muscles, next you want to increase your quickness and speed. There are several ways to improve your speed while working out the quads and calve muscles.

The first exercise to consider is simply running the 40 yard dash. This is a short sprint and will help improve your overall quickness, speed, and agility. For the next exercise, get a ladder that is able to be used for working out and do different drills running through the ladder and side to side.

The last exercise to enhance and increase your speed are box jumps. Get a box that is around 2 to 3 feet high depending on how tall you are. What you want to do is jump up onto the box and land softly. Then, jump back down and back up as quickly as possible to help speed up your "How To Dunk" Training.

When it comes to getting the best results from your "How To Dunk" Training workouts, you need to focus on these two muscles and facets. As long as you work out your quads and calves while increasing strength and quickness, you will be well on your way to adding inches to your vertical leap and dunking like crazy.

How to Dunk Higher - Improve Your Vertical Leap

People like me who have tried everything to increase their vertical leap and learn how to dunk higher must read this. I have tried Air Alert, The Science of Jumping, Strength Shoes, and many other programs coaches have made me do. Nothing has worked. The code has finally been cracked as I have increased my vertical by 8 inches using a simple, innovative formula. This new formula truly is the answer I have been searching for. It is quickness x strength = explosion.

This formula is the key! It all makes so much sense now. If your leg muscles are very strong, but you cannot jump high then you must increase their quickness. What I mean by that is that you must increase the speed in which the muscles fire (contract). If you have very quick firing muscles and cannot jump high then you must increase your strength. This is where many jump programs fail. They do not focus on strength and only have the player use plyometrics to increase their vert, but if you look at the formula that's only half of it. That's why some people only do plyometrics and see great results and other do not and vise versa with squats.

Many people think that if you can squat a lot of weight then you should be able to jump high. Wrong! Jumping uses mostly fast twitch muscles. This sort of training recruits an entirely different type of muscle fiber. If that same person has great leg strength they must now focus on getting those muscles to fire quicker. This is where plyos come in because that is their specialty, but if you do not have the strength to begin with you cannot get those muscles to fire fast enough.

Have you ever wondered why some guys can jump out of the building and they have what look like skinny, weak legs? Skinny, yes...Weak, no. These type of legs have extremely fast firing muscles (plus some structural things with their bodies) in their skinny calves. Take a look at their "butts" and their upper thighs. This is where all their strength is hidden. 90% of these type people have "big butts" and thick thighs in comparison to the rest of their body's structure.

I'm just trying to tell whoever reads this that I personally have used a jumping program that uses this quickness x strength = explosion formula and gotten results. I haven't increase my vert by 20 inches and I haven't doubled it, but for a guy who has tried and everything and failed to gain 8 inches is pretty good I think. Don't you? I have gone from barely getting a one-foot-one-hand dunk on good days to dunking with two hands, throwing it off the back board, and on good days an awkward 360. What is even better though is that I can dunk in games now, which I never would believe before I learned this new formula.

Attacking the 2-3 Zone Defense

There are number of reason why a coach will decide to implement a zone defense as part of their game plan and there are just as many zone variations as there are reasons for using them. A basketball coach must be prepared to attack the zone using a multitude of approaches. Before building a game plan the number one thing to know is; no matter the initial alignment ALL zone defenses morph to a 2-3 alignment once the ball is entered to either the wing or the corner. Once a coach understands this concept he is ready to build his offensive philosophy.

Philosophies vary in degrees but all have a common thread. In order to beat the zone the experts will tell you to beat the defense down the floor. Not allowing the defense to get set will keep them on their heels and allow for a multitude of scoring opportunities. Next coaches believe ball reversal is critical. To say it is not would be a lie, ball reversal keeps the defense moving and does not allow them to get comfortable in their designated guarding positions. Finally a well schooled basketball coach might believe patience is a virtue and necessary in order to beat a 2-3 zone. This is debatable given you just read speed down the floor is a key element to beating a zone.

Yet what the experts won't tell you about beating the 2-3 zone are three very important key features. All zone offensive attacks; both continuity and set plays must have three key features.

• "The 2/3's Rule". Dribble penetration is a must in order to attack the 2-3 zone. Guards must be able to attack the front lines of the defense and get to the middle low defender using the dribble. The 2/3's Rule is simple. Beat two of the three defenders who are responsible for ball side defense.
• Screening. Similar to the 2/3's Rule. Screening is a hidden gem in used to attack zone defenses-especially the 2-3 zone. Set plays must use screening options to attack front line defenders and the low middle.
• Short Corner Attack. The 90 degree angle made by the lane line with the end line is called the 'short corner'. Getting behind the defense and attacking this area is a guaranteed score each time.

Age Eligibility Rule is Exploitative

High School basketball seniors are now on the crossroads of their lives. They now have a decision to make; do they play college basketball and go through another year of not earning anything or go to Europe and play against men to develop their games and ready themselves for the big show; the NBA.

Unlike the seniors of the past, kids today will no longer have the opportunity to jump straight from high school to the NBA. They have to spend one more year after graduating high school before they can step inside the gates of the NBA. This is unfair. It is Unfair to students, and unfair to the players who are obviously being exploited by the hypocrisy of the collegiate basketball system and David Stern.

Unfair to the Players

It is odd to think that it is only in the NBA where the 'one year after high school' rule applies. Other sports leagues like the NFL, MLB and other professional leagues allow for players to come straight from high school. And because of this oddity the players suffer.

It is unfair for the league to impose this type of age eligibility and stop a player from earning money. Money that the player could have been used to help take care of themselves and their families; money that could have been in their pockets a year earlier. Money today is more valuable than money in the future.

Business Decision for David Stern

For the college coaches, it is understandable that they want the players to go through them before they go pro. It keeps them relevant. But for David Stern, it is a business decision, even if he masks it behind the guise of 'social responsibility.'

For Stern, one year in college allows these players to get more airtime, which in turn allows them to get more fans. This also allows for hype to build up and for excitement to increase. This then leads to more people following these boys into the NBA, keeping track of their progress. This is something that cannot be achieved if players were to jump straight from high school. And so, the rule, as far as the NBA is concerned, is good for business.

Unfair to the Students

This rule is also unfair to the regular college student who will have to share the same campus with players who do not have the slightest interest in getting an education. It is unfair to put them in a situation where they see their peers simply doing their time, cruising along, and not taking college seriously. The students are forced to share resources with these players who in a year, will be gone; resources that could have been put to better use for students who actually want to go to college but cant.

It is not a question of education (if it was then the rule would have been to finish college before entering the NBA) but a question of profits. The NBA needs this rule to make their fan base grow. The colleges need this to make their basketball programs relevant, and thus, increase ratings on games. It is a matter of profits, profits that students and players will now have to pay for, whether they like it or not. GP

LeBron is Looking Sillier by the Minute

King LeBron James is a freak of nature. Make no mistake about it; he is a fine example of someone who was given a special gift by God He has talent, he has charisma, he has the physique, and most importantly, he has youth. Unfortunately for LeBron, his youth is turning against him. He is finally showing the arrogance and sense if entitlement that usually comes with it. His recent actions are starting to overshadow all of what he has done these past five years.

First, there was the immature act of leaving the floor after the loss to the Orlando Magic, without so much as a congratulatory nod. Next there is the conspiracy of the lost 'dunk' tapes. Slowly but steadily, LeBron is turning from the King to the Jester.

King's Loss

After the loss of the 6th game of the 2009 Eastern Conference Finals, LeBron James left the floor of the arena, without even giving the Magic players what they were due; a handshake or even, a friendly nod.. The Magic were the better team. They beat the King's team fairly, and they deserved to go to the Finals. James just could not handle it.

James has to understand that even the greatest players in the history of the NBA stayed behind and shook the hands of the winning team. Jordan always had enough respect for the other team to stay behind and shake the hands of the winner. Kobe swallowed his pride and shook the hands of the Celtics when hey beat him for last year's finals. Joe Dumars stayed behind and shook Jordan's hand, even as Isaiah Thomas led a walkout after losing to the Bulls a year after their 2 championships. James should have stayed behind.

King's Pride

Now comes the infamous conspiracy of the confiscated tapes of Jordan Crawford, a Xavier Sophomore, dunking over LeBron James at LeBron's "Skills Academy." The sophomore apparently dunked on the King during a pick-up game, while two cameras were filming. After the incident, Nike officials confiscated the tapes, undoubtedly, following James' order. They later announced that the confiscation had nothing to do with the dunk but no one really believed them.

James' pride was hurt when the young Crawford made him feel what it was like on the other side of an incredible dunk. It made him feel foolish and made him feel like a chump. So what does the King do? Act foolish and act like a chump. Have the tapes confiscated and have them erased. In doing so, he became what he wanted to avoid, a fool.

The King has Time

Fortunately for James, he has time to make amends. He still has the opportunity to be the King that he so wished to be. He still has the chance to grow up and see that congratulating winners is not sign of weakness but a sign of maturity and a sign of true champion. He has the opportunity to realize that seeing one's self as an untouchable god will only lead to alienation.

The King is turning into a Jester but all is not lost for LeBron. He just has to grow up and realize that sometimes, being a King means bowing down giving people what they are due. GP

5. Steve Nash with Vitamin Water: This funny basketball commercial was not widely aired, but is down right funny. It reminds me of Zoolander. So if you like that type of humor, you have to see this. It is basically Steve Nash saying all these outrageous things about himself while he is doing a model shoot and putting on makeup.

4. Be Like Mike (Gatorade) Original: The one that started it all I guys. "Like Mike, I wish a could be like Mike." How that has stuck even today. How could this not be a top commercial if even years later people are still saying "I wish I could be like Mike."

3. Nike Freestyle: This Nike commercial is exactly what it says it is. Freestyle. It has a whole bunch of people doing sick moves with the basketball. It is put together to an absolutely sweet rhythm and it makes you want to go out and learn and do the moves that the people on the commercial are doing.

2. Let Your Game Speak: Once again, a Nike commercial. I am not a Nike fan, but there commercials are good. This Nike commercial features a whole bunch of kids doing Michael Jordan moves. They then go on to do some of his highlight dunks. It ends with them having the same game winners as him. It is basically a whole bunch of kids in a Michael Jordan highlight real with sweet music. Just Awesome.

1. Kobe and Lebron Puppets: This commercials were just absolutely awesome. For once, it was like the Superbowl when watching the NBA playoffs because I could not wait until another one of these commercials came on. There was "playoffs" commercial in which Lebron is totally jacked and is running around doing his chalk ritual and Kobe is like "been there, done that." Then there is the "babysitting" commercial in which they have to babysitting this annoying little kid. The good part comes when they show the kid their shoe room and he shuts up and grabs for his inhaler. There is the "rings" commercial in which Kobe lets Lebron know about how many rings he has and the "car jump" commercial in which Kobe's puppet does Kobe's original (fake) car jump. This are just absolutely great.

How Should I Train to Jump Higher?

The question of how can I jump higher is frequently asked, the answer is everyone is different and your mechanical make up will dictate the limits of your jumping abilities. All you can do is follow a good program and give it all you've got.

The process of training to jump higher is relatively straight forward but does require a commitment. To undertake a program it will take months to make real progress and must be kept up so as not to loose what you have earned.

First find a vertical jump program that you feel may work for you and stick with it. Do not jump from one program to another trying to find a quick fix because you will not make as much progress. Be persistent with your program and you will see improvement in your jump height.

You will have to spend time in the beginning working at strengthening the legs. The thigh muscles are the main muscle group to work on because they are more responsible for being able to jump. It is weak thighs that limit many people from being able to jump higher.

The most important exercise to use to strengthen the thighs would be the squat. The next would be dead lifts; both of these exercises will really develop the thigh muscles and also have the side benefit of being a good whole body workout. The bulk of your strengthening phase will be using these two exercises plus a few other leg exercises.

Following the strengthening phase you could start to do plyometric type workouts. These would be for developing explosive strength in your legs. Be careful with plyometrics and do not over do them. Plyometrics are stressful to the body and if not done correctly could be counter productive. Only do them two or three times a week.

These two components are the more important parts of the vertical jump training. You will find there are other things that to do that are part of your training. Do them all correctly without cheating and you will see progress.

This is a good thing because you can perform this exercise at home or in the office. Therefore, you will have no excuse not to do this one.

The three exercises above will get you started on the right track to increasing your jumping abilities. There is no one exercise to jump higher; you must do a series of them to really get good results. San Antonio Spurs' Four NBA Championships

The San Antonio Spurs have won 4 NBA championships throughout their history. All of those championships came under the leadership of coach Gregg Popovich and superstar forward Tim Duncan. Here are brief histories of the Spurs' 4 NBA championship titles:

1. 1998-99 Season. The San Antonio Spurs' first ever NBA championship came in the lockout-shortened 1999 season. 5. 1996-97 Season. The Bulls successfully defended their title in 1997. Facing the Western Conference champions Utah Jazz that was led by Karl Malone and John Stockton in the Finals, the Bulls emerged victorious in six games. Michael Jordan won his fifth Finals MVP Award.

6. 1997-98 Season. The Bulls' last NBA championship came in 1998, after they defeated the Utah Jazz in a repeat of the 1997 NBA Finals. The Bulls were able to replicate their success from the previous season by winning the series 4-2. Michael Jordan was once again chosen as the Finals MVP.

Vertical Training - Basic Jump Science

The height of a jump is determined by the velocity of the center of mass as the body leaves the ground. The faster the initial upward velocity, the longer it will take for gravity to decelerate the body and bring it back to earth. The initial velocity is determined by the acceleration of the center of mass due to the force generated by the body, mostly the legs. So if you want to increase your vertical leap, the goal is to increase the force that your legs can generate. Simple enough right? Just lift weights, and your muscles will grow; your legs will be stronger, and you will jump higher. Well, everyone discovers at some point that jump training is not quite that easy.

The truth is that there are three different muscle and nerve qualities that contribute to a jump. (Notice that I mentioned nerves. Many people do not realize the importance of the nervous system in jump training.)The first quality that affects a jump is maximum strength or limit strength; this is the largest amount of force that a muscle can exert. This is the most familiar muscle quality and the most commonly trained. It is increased by common resistance training, which most people are familiar with. The back squat is an example of a resistance training exercise that would help someone jump higher. The second muscle quality is speed of force development, more simply stated as explosiveness. Muscles cannot instantly exert their maximum force; it takes a little bit of time to activate all the muscle fibers. That time is small, just a fraction of a second, but it is still longer than the time it takes to jump, meaning that the maximum force of a muscle cannot be utilized in a jump.

This is the reason for the gap between strength and jumping ability. Consider this scenario... Let's say Timmy weighs 150 pounds and can exert 500 pounds of force on his center of mass (COM) in the range of the jumping motion. As Timmy finishes the countermovement before his jump, his legs are not generating that 500 pounds of force yet. 2/100 of a second after his muscles begin to develop force, his legs are exceeding 150 pounds, and his COM begins to accelerate upwards. At 1/10 of a second, his legs are putting out 215 pounds of force, and his COM is accelerating faster. By 2/10 of a second, the force on his COM has grown to 350 pounds, but unfortunately his legs and back are fully extended; he's done jumping. Timmy never got to use all his force. These force numbers are purely hypothetical, but people really do take right around 2/10 of a second to jump.

The maximum force an athlete's body can exert cannot be generated in that time. The goal for athletes is to train to increase the percentage of their maximum force that can be generated quickly enough for use in jumping and all athletic maneuvers. This ability is improved by exercises that require fast muscle contraction; power lifts (clean, snatch, jerk) and plyometric drills are the most common. Note though, that exercises that use fast movement do very little to increase the strength of the muscle. It is the ability of the nervous system to quickly stimulate muscle fibers that is the focus of this training. The third muscle quality is elastic strength. This is the ability of muscles and tendons to store energy in a stretch and utilize it in the following contraction. This process, called the stretch-shortening cycle, is what causes a higher jump from an approach than from a standstill. The human body naturally uses a countermovement before powerful motions in order to take advantage of this muscle-tendon quality. When you squat down to jump or pull your arm back to throw, you are using elastic strength to add force to the motion. The trick is that the desired motion must immediately follow the stretch to prevent the energy from dissipating. To demonstrate this, perform a natural jump and take note of how high you got. Then do a jump but pause for a second in the crouched position before exploding upward.

This jump should not be as high, because the energy from the drop into the crouched position dissipates during the pause. Elasticity of the muscle-tendon complex is improved by plyometric training and increased flexibility.

Vertical leap training needs to be tailored to the individual strengths and weaknesses of an athlete in the areas that have been mentioned. Therefore, it is incorrect to offer a single program and guarantee a certain result to anybody who tries it. A basketball player who cannot squat his own bodyweight will hardly benefit from a plyometric program, and a bodybuilder who squats twice his bodyweight will experience little gain from adding 20 pounds to his max squat. An effective training system must target all the facets of vertical jumping.

Basketball Training 101 - Building the Right Muscles

Basketball is a sport centered on power.

Physical ability is king and the higher you jump, the faster you run and the more punishment you can take will determine your ability to dominate the game. But to get all of this power you need the right kind of muscles.

Players, especially younger players, are oblivious to the fact that there are 3 different kinds of skeletal muscle in the human body - all of which have different properties and uses.

Type 1 muscles are the muscles that long distance runners try to develop because this kind of muscle is good at putting a constant amount of power out for a long time.

Type 2b muscles are the muscles that basketball players should be looking to develop. This kind of muscle is used for movements that last only a few moments but that are explosively powerful like sprinting and jumping.

There is also another type of muscle - Type 2a - which is the most interesting muscle type because it is this muscle that has properties of both type 1 and type 2b. It can also be influenced to become more like either muscle by targeting training techniques.

Basketball players should be concentrating on developing mostly type 2b muscles because these are the ones that are used for basically every movement on the basketball court. Training these muscles is done by looking at what kind of movements this muscle type is used for then overloading the stimulus for this type of muscle to work.

This essentially means that to train your 'power type' muscles you need to do low rep - high intensity training. By doing this you specifically target the type 2b muscles because this is the type of movement they are meant for. Type 1 muscles are not really used to capacity here because the stimulus is too great and so they are of nearly no use.

A simple example of such training is squats. By doing only 5 squats but doing them with an overload of weight we specifically target the type 2 muscles. Less reps means that the type 1 muscles are not needed because the training is power training and not stamina training.

By doing this type of training another thing happens - type 2a muscles are starting to transform into type 2b muscles. As this happens the percentage of quick twitch (type 2b) to slow twitch (type 1) increases.

It is this ratio increase that will allow you to become a player with muscles better suited to the sport you love - basketball.

1. Practice Your Fade away
The way Kobe can score points is by creating space between his guard. He probably has the greatest fade away shot since Michael Jordan.

Keep in mind when practicing your fade away, to always square up to the hoop when you are at the peak of your jump. The source of the power from your shot is from your wrist action, so remember to your wrist to get that ball in the hoop.

2. Know How to Drive to the Hoop Efficiently
Kobe can get easy baskets by beating his opponent and driving to the basket.The first step to driving to the basket is by getting past your opponent. Do this by doing a simple jab step or crossover. Then explode to the hoop, but be aware that there are probably help defenders that will come upon you.

An important thing when driving to the hoop is to not be afraid. Be confident and keep on moving aggressively to the hoop. Be smart and make the right decisions. Don't throw up a bad shot. Instead dish it off to an open teammate.

3. Be Aware
The reason why Kobe Bryant is so amazing, is because he has a high awareness of what's going on in the court. He knows exactly where to be at the right time. Awareness is essential to any basketball player because you can predict what will happen in a certain situation before it even happens. This helps especially when you are on defense.

2008 Top Ten Teams in the NBA

Here is my list of the top ten teams in the NBA 2008-09. season.

1. Boston Celtics: The returning championship team, these guys now know what it takes to get to the finals and come out victorious. Their record so far is just as impressive, they are 20-2. They could break the Chicago Bulls record of 72-10 if they keep up that pace. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Rondo, Allen, Cassell, so much talent it's unbelievable.

2. Cleveland Cavaliers: Lebron James is hungry for a championship ring. Whether he does it with Cleveland, or eventually New York, he will eventually get one. He has that essence that Jordan had where you knew he would accomplish his goals. He has more talent around him this year and is doing very well. He is averaging 26.7 points a game right now. Lebron deserves his first MVP this year as his team would be 4-16 without him most likely at this point.

3. L.A. Lakers: What better rival to Boston than L.A.? It carries on the legacy of guys like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson among others. These guys are looking just as hard to beat as last year if not more. Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum are playing stellar this year. Their record is 17-3 and they are on a good pace to possible break the 72-10 mark as well. Kobe is averaging 24.9 points and might get MVP again.

4. Denver Nuggets: Now that they have Chauncey Billups they seem more revitalized. They play transition offense and defense much better and get the key plays. Clutch shooting is no problem now that Billups is here to save them. They could make one of their deepest playoff runs ever this year.

5. Portland Trailblazers: Talk about young talent. They have Brandon Roy, Greg Oden, LaMarcus Aldrige, Steve Blake, and Channing Frye. That is probably the youngest team I've seen in a while. While it will take time for Oden to develop and harness his skills, this team is an all out threat. Brandon Roy is having one of his best seasons averaging 20 points a game.

6. Orlando Magic: Dwight Howard is trying to end the season with the highest average of rebounds a game. Oh yeah he already is achieving that for the most part. He is getting 21 point and 14.5 rebounds per game. He is a player every team would love to have. On top of that they have Rashard Lewis, a big threat all around, as well as Turkoglu who can drain if from three land whenever he is called upon.

7. New Orleans Hornets: Now that they have some playoff experience, watch out! With a deadly guard in Chris Paul and a terrific finisher in Tyson Chandler the Hornets will hurt you everywhere. They also have Peja Stojakovic for when they need a clutch three. They are lacking in front court depth and don't have the best back up for Chris Paul. Other than that they look to do some more damage this year in the post season.

8. Houston Rockets: Talk about great depth, Tracy McGrady is hurt again, yet that doesn't stop the Rockets. They are 14-8 so far. They are definitely a sleeper team that could shock a lot of people. I know it sounds cliche but once Yao Ming and T-Mac are back in force, it will be on for the race in the SouthWest division.

9. Dallas Mavericks: A very rocky start for the Mavericks, but they are starting to turn it around. They are beating the teams that they should so far. But they need to show they can beat the Cavs, Lakers, and Celtics of the NBA world. Cause if they don't, making the playoffs really won't matter if you lose in round one again.

10. San Antonio Spurs: Losing Tony Parker was a big blow to the team earlier in the season. They are fighting back now that they have him, and have a 12-8 record so far which is on par for the upper ten percent of teams. Parker is still not his old self just yet as his stats are way below his norm.

The Golden State Warriors Continue to Battle Their Way Back to the NBA Finals

Today, the Golden State Warriors are somewhat of an enigma. Why does their name represent an entire state? Who are the "Warriors" to which their name refers? Have they ever won an NBA championship? Like other NBA teams, the Warriors have a storied history, and one that is definitely worth telling.

Where did the name "Warriors" originate? The NBA team inherited its name from a former ABL squad, the Philadelphia Warriors.

The Warriors made their NBA debut during the 1962-1963 season, though their former name was the San Francisco Warriors. Their team featured Wilt Chamberlain, arguably one of the top NBA players of all time. Nevertheless, the Warriors watched the playoffs from home, after a disappointing 31-49 season. Interestingly, the Cow Palace was the home arena of the Warriors.

Amazingly, the Warriors achieved tremendous success in just their second NBA season in San Francisco. Thanks to a solid seven-player rotation, the Warriors finished first in their Western Division, earning a record of 48-32. The Warriors outlasted the St. Louis Hawks, after battling it out in a seven-game playoff series. However, the Boston Celtics then steamrolled the Warriors in five games, for the former's sixth consecutive NBA championship.

Just three seasons later during 1966-1967, the San Francisco Warriors had another stellar season. They ended it with a 44-37 record. The Warriors quickly dismissed the Los Angeles Lakers with three consecutive wins, and then needed six games to dispose of the St. Louis Hawks again. Wilt Chamberlain played in the NBA Finals that season, but to the chagrin of the Warriors-started for the Philadelphia 76ers. The 76ers proved to be the superior team, defeating the Warriors 4-2 in the NBA Finals.

The Warriors moved from San Francisco to Oakland, before the 1971-1972 season. The team hoped to attract a larger fan base, thus alternating its name to the "Golden State" Warriors. Since 1968, California's nickname had been "The Golden State." This was due to the 1848 monumental discovery of gold in California.

Just three seasons after moving to Oakland, the Golden State Warriors struck gold. The team made some bold moves before the 1974-1975 season, which paid off. The franchise built its squad around Rick Barry, who had made the team contenders for the NBA championship. Earning a record of 48-34, the Warriors won the Pacific Division crown.

In the playoffs, the Warriors played with a gritty determination. They needed six games to eliminate the Seattle Supersonics. Then, after down 2-0 in their series against the Chicago Bulls, the Warriors battled back to win the series 4-3. Although the NBA Finals games against the Washington Bullets were tight (two games had a 1-point spread), the Warriors swept the Bullets in the series 4-0.

Though lacking the broad following of other NBA teams, the Golden State Warriors have remained a solid team throughout their history, making three trips to the NBA's championship series. Before the Pistons moved to Detroit in 1957, they called Fort Wayne, Indiana, their hometown. The Pistons had represented Fort Wayne for 16 seasons. Ironically, when the Pistons moved to Detroit, they had moved to planet Earth's capital for automobile manufacturing. Thus, "Pistons" seemed quite appropriate. As a side note, the team was originally named the Pistons in honor of Fred Zollner, its founder. Zollner owned Zollner Machine Works, which manufactured (you guessed it) pistons!

Amazingly, the Detroit Pistons performed quite well during their premiere season. They finished the season with a 33-39 record. In the playoffs, the Pistons faced the Cincinnati Royals, and won the series 2-0. However, the Pistons lost the Western Conference Finals to the St. Louis Hawks.

The Pistons have achieved much success throughout the history of the franchise. They have been Division Champions nine times, have played in 13 Conference Finals, have participated in five NBA finals, and have become NBA champions during three different years: 1989, 1990, and 2004.

Though the Pistons have most recently reached the NBA finals in 2004 and 2005, they also played in that series in 1988, 1989, and 1990.

1987-1988 season
After losing the previous year in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Pistons had another outstanding season, earning a 54-28 record and the Central Division crown. The Pistons edged the Washington Bullets in the playoffs, with a 3-2 victory. They then easily disposed of the Chicago Bulls and the Boston Celtics. Up 3-2 in the series, the Pistons could not put away the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals, losing in Game 7, 108-105.

1988-1989 season
This season, the Pistons were all business. They ended the regular season with a 63-19 record, and then swept the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks in the playoffs. They then battled it out against the Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals, eventually winning the series 4-2. The Los Angeles Lakers got more than their feelings hurt in the NBA Finals, with the Pistons sweeping the series 4-0.

1989-1990 season
Continuing their winning ways, the Pistons ended the season with a solid 59-23 record. They trounced the Indiana Pacers and then the New York Knicks in the playoffs. The Pistons' defense then helped them to outlast the Bulls in the Eastern Finals, in seven games. In the NBA finals, the Pistons faced the Portland Trailblazers. After taking a 3-1 lead in the series, the Pistons came-from-behind to win Game 5 on the road. They were back-to-back NBA champions!

Since their first season in the NBA, a gritty will to win has fueled the Detroit Pistons' success. The Denver Nuggets Keep Going For the Gold of an NBA Finals Trophy

Since the 1976-1977 NBA season, the Denver Nuggets have been digging for gold. That gold is the NBA Finals trophy. The Nuggets have indeed achieved success in the NBA playoffs. They have appeared in the playoffs 19 times, have been Division Champions on five occasions, and have even reached the NBA Conference Finals twice. However, throughout their history they have continued to go for the gold.

How did the name "Nuggets" become good as gold? Before they were the Denver Nuggets, people referred to them as the Denver Rockets. "Nuggets" alludes to the gold mining industry, around which people built the city of Denver. Speaking of Denver, here are some interesting facts about the city:

• Year founded: 1858
• Year incorporated: 1861
• Elevation: 5,280 feet
• Average yearly snowfall: 55.4 inches
• Major injuries: communications, transportation, utilities

Getting back to the Denver Nuggets history, the team formerly existed as the Denver Rockets, from 1967-1974. Then prior to the 1974-1975 season, the Rockets transformed into the Nuggets. This honored Denver's first professional basketball team, which had played in the young NBA until 1950.

After the American Basketball Association folded in 1976, the new Denver Nuggets played their first NBA game on October 22, 1976. Unlike the other three ABA teams that joined the NBA, the Nuggets had a golden year. In fact, with a record of 50-32, the Nuggets ended their premiere NBA season at the top of the Midwest Division. However, the Portland Trailblazers would eliminate the Nuggets in the playoffs, by winning their series 4-2.

During the 1977-1978 season, the Nuggets achieved even greater success in just their second season in the NBA. Once again, the Nuggets earned the Midwest Division Title, ending the season with a 48-34 record. This year, however, the Nuggets won their first playoff series. They battled it out with the Milwaukee Bucks, finally defeating them in seven games. However, the Nuggets were unable to reach the NBA Finals, losing in the Western Conference Finals to the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks won the series 4-2.

During the next six seasons, the Denver Nuggets reached the playoffs four times. However, they would not match their 1977-1978 playoff success until the 1984-1985 season. The Nuggets made some bold and wise trades before the first jump-ball of the season. They finished the season with a commendable 52-30 record, and again won the Midwest Division of the NBA. The Nuggets first defeated the San Antonio Spurs with a 3-2 series win, and then demolished the Utah Jazz with a 4-1 series victory. However, the Nuggets lost to the Los Angeles Lakers 4-1, in the Western Conference Finals.

After the 1984-1985 season, the Nuggets were division champions again in 1988 and 2006. Unfortunately for Nuggets fans, they lost in their second and first series of the playoffs, respectfully. A return to the Western Conference Finals remained elusive.
